Definition
While moving left to right across a period, the number of valence electrons of elements increases and varies between 1 to 8. But the valency of elements, when combined with H or O first, increases from 1 to 4 and then it reduces to zero. Consider two compounds containing oxygen Na 2 O and F 2 O. N has 5 electrons and O has 6. Remember we need octets and to get it you need a double bond with one of the oxygens. We started with 23 electrons but in the diagram we have 24. D viewcam download mac. We’ve added an electron to complete it for the octet rule and because of that extra electron, that is why it is -1. It’s not a -3 because of the double bond. The total number of electrons present in the valence shell of an atom are called valence electrons, and there are a total of six electrons present in the valence shell of oxygen (2s²2p⁴). Thus, oxygen has six valence electrons.
The valence electrons are the electrons in the outermost shell or last energy level of an atom.
valence electrons are electrons in the last shell of an atom
Valence electrons are electrons in the highest principal energy level.
They are electrons that sit in the outermost shell of an atom.
They are responsible for the chemical properties of each element.
THE SHELLS OF AN ATOM
The maximum number of electrons that can be in the same shell is fixed, and they are filled from the closest to farthest shell
- K Shell (this is the closest shell to the nucleus): 2 electrons maximum
- L Shell: 8 electrons maximum
- M Shell: 18 electrons maximum
- N Shell: 32 electrons maximum
- O Shell: 50 electrons maximum
- P Shell (this is the farthest shell from the nucleus): 72 electrons maximum
HOW TO FIND THE NUMBER OF VALENCE ELECTRONS FROM A PERIODIC TABLE
- The Group 1 atoms have 1 valence electron
- The Group 2 atoms have 2 valence electrons
- The Group 13 atoms have 3 valence electrons
- The Group 14 atoms have 4 valence electrons
- The Group 15 atoms have 5 valence electrons
- The Group 16 atoms have 6 valence electrons
- The Group 17 atoms have 7 valence electrons
- The Group 18 atoms have 8 valence electrons with the exception of Helium which has 2 electrons
- The transition metals are more difficult to determine the number of valence electrons. Some of their valence electrons are in the inner shells.
OCTET RULE
The octet rule states that atoms tend to gain, lose, or share electrons so as to have eight electrons in their outer shell because this is more stable.
But the octet rule does not always apply and some bonds that don’t follow the octet rule still form.
For more information on the octet rule of stable electron configuration, please read the octet rule

Principal energy levels are broken down into sublevels. Theoretically there are an infinite number principal energy levels and sublevels. If you are just starting to study chemistry, you should only be concerned with the first 4 sublevels. Each sublevel is assigned a letter. The four you need to know are s (sharp), p (principle), d (diffuse), and f (fine or fundamental). So, s,p,d & f. The Principal Energy Level (the #) only holds that # of sublevels.
Yes, the 5th energy level holds 5 sublevels and that last one would be 5g. Rome total war free download mac full game. The number of electrons in each sublevel
Electrons fill in energy order (Aufbau Principle) not energy level order. NOTE-Some Principal Energy Levels start to fill before previous ones finish. ex 4s fills before 3d, because 4s has less energy than 3d. It must fill first. Electrons fill the sublevels in energy order 1s 2s 2p 3s 3p 4s 3d 4p 5s 4d 5p 6s 4f 5d 6p 7s 5f 6d 7p If we add the number of electrons that each sublevel holds it looks like this: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 5s2 4d10 5p6 6s2 4f14 5d10 6p6 7s2 5f14 6d10 7p6 The diagram below really shows the overlap of the Principal Energy Levels on to Sublevels and the Periodic Table Slack download mac os x.
